cgroups (abbreviated from control groups) is a Linux kernel feature that limits, accounts for, and isolates the resource usage (CPU, memory, disk I/O, network, etc.) of a collection of processes. Engineers at Google (primarily Paul Menage and Rohit Seth ) started the work on this feature in 2006 under the name "process containers". [1]
In order to interact with the cgroups we need some user-space tools capable of doing this. All the necessary binaries are provided by the libcgroup-tools package which you need to install on your Docker host machine if it is not already installed. Cgroups are exposed to the user through a virtual filesystem. Therefore, cgroups can also be explored as a normal hierarchy of directories and files without the need for any special tools.
You can get by running Docker containers with shell scripts, or with Docker Compose (if you don't mind ignoring the 'don't use in production' warnings), but for some use cases, it's preferable to take advantage of the host init system/process manager.
